Pickwick Place: A Custom Family Home at the 2024 Homearama at The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm

The vision for Pickwick Place was clear: create a warm, inviting and comfortable family home that has enough space for everyone to hangout and connect, as well as, enjoy their own personal space. With five growing children, this previous Wieland Builder’s custom home owner needed more room to accommodate their lifestyle, while ensuring the home remained inviting and casual. The design embraces a Botanica-inspired aesthetic, with soft tones, natural textures, and organic touches throughout.

Unique Features of the Front of Pickwick Place

Pickwick Place is designed in the Modern European Country Architectural Style, blending timeless elegance with contemporary charm. This style is beautifully reflected in the exterior materials and design choices. From the gables and steep roof pitch to the carefully selected colored dimensional shingles, the bronze roof, windows, and gutters provide a modern contrast while maintaining the home’s classic appeal.

The combination of brick and Hardie siding enhances the home’s durability and aesthetic. The detailed brickwork, painted white with soldier courses and sills, offers a clean and refined look. On the gables, the brick gradually steps out toward the eaves, creating depth and visual interest that is characteristic of European country homes.

Wood accents throughout the exterior, such as the Mahogany wood front door, pre-finished garage doors, and cedar trellises, further emphasize the Modern European Country style. The pergola and friends’ entrance add a rustic, welcoming touch, completing the home’s harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication.

Pickwick Place’s architectural details and materials make it an inviting, picturesque home that stands out in its class.

The Heart of the Home: Kitchen and Dining

The kitchen and dining spaces are truly the hub of family activities. The kitchen is designed for flow, with zones for cooking, entertaining, and casual dining. A custom white oak-stained island seats six, and hidden cabinets provide additional storage. The pantry, or “back kitchen,” is one of the family’s favorite spots, featuring clever storage solutions like a pull-out mixer cabinet and appliance garages. In the dining room, large windows and sliding doors bring in natural light, while custom ceiling beams add visual interest.

Architectural Elegance

One of the most defining features of Pickwick Place is the use of arches, giving the home a timeless, elegant feel. Arches are integrated throughout the main floor, from the front door and porch to the windows, pantry entry, the primary bathroom custom mirror frame, the window above the freestanding tub and even above the fireplace insert in the dining room. These arched elements create a cohesive design, bringing softness and flow to the space. Warm gold tones, used in both the plumbing and light fixtures, add a touch of sophistication while maintaining the home’s inviting atmosphere.

White Oak Warmth

White oak plays a significant role in bringing warmth to the home’s aesthetic. White oak hardwood flooring is featured throughout the first floor, as well as, in key areas like the kitchen hood, mudroom bench, desk, and built-ins in the great room. White oak accents are also seen in the primary bathroom’s floating shelves and pantry, tying the design elements together seamlessly.

Primary Suite: A Private Retreat

The primary suite is a spa-like retreat for the parents. The bedroom flows effortlessly into the bathroom, leading into a pass-through closet connected to the laundry room—a highly functional design that simplifies daily routines. The bathroom is a highlight, featuring faux marble floors and an arched window above the standing tub. Custom white oak cabinetry, along with a floor-to-ceiling arabesque tile backsplash, creates a warm, relaxing atmosphere. Thoughtful touches like a drawer with an outlet for hair appliances and a quartz bench in the shower add both luxury and practicality.

A Home Tailored to Each Family Member

With four girls and one boy, the children’s spaces were carefully designed to reflect their individual personalities. Each bedroom and bathroom is sophisticated enough for them to grow into, avoiding overly childish designs. The girls’ rooms feature soft pinks and purples, while the boy’s room embraces shades of blue. Bonus spaces, such as a craft room on the first floor and a sitting/hangout loft area off the bedrooms on the second floor, ensure that the kids have areas to express themselves and spend time together.

Functional Family Spaces

The mudroom and drop zone areas were designed with family life in mind. Each child has their own hook for coats and bags, and the custom-stained bench and desk are perfectly placed for convenience. A special “Mom’s desk” area provides a quiet, organized space just for her, while the drop zone near the garage is ideal for everyday essentials like keys, mail, and backpacks. Dad has his space too, he works from home and his home office has glass pocket doors for privacy.

Outdoor Living: Expanding the Entertainment Space

Pickwick Place boasts a spectacular outdoor living area designed for relaxation and entertaining. The rear of the home features multiple zones, including a covered, screened-in back porch that seamlessly extends the great room’s cathedral ceiling. With wide-span screens, even within the gable, the porch offers an uninterrupted view of the outdoors while providing comfort and protection.

The fireplace, with its brick hearth and soldier course, rises up to meet the cathedral ceiling, adding both warmth and grandeur. Designed for year-round use, this wood-burning feature is the heart of the outdoor space, creating an inviting ambiance for family gatherings.

A standout feature is the 16-foot-wide sliding glass door, which opens to a spacious 8-foot span. This allows the home’s indoor living area to flow effortlessly into the outdoors, blending both spaces for a larger, more flexible entertainment zone. The beams are strategically placed to avoid blocking the gables or the windows above the sliding doors, ensuring the natural light and open feel of the space remain intact.

Beyond the covered porch is a sun patio with a custom-built outdoor grill, ideal for hosting cookouts and casual meals. The area is partially covered, offering a mix of sun and shade for outdoor enjoyment in any weather. With three convenient exterior entrances—one from the great room and two from the dining room—access to this outdoor oasis is as easy as it is inviting.

These well-planned outdoor spaces make Pickwick Place the perfect setting for both everyday relaxation and memorable celebrations.
