Wieland Builders’ Favorite Family Holiday Movies

Wieland Builders is proud of our 65 years of experience and family tradition built on hard work, dependability, honesty, quality and family values.

One of the ways our owners Mike and Jeff Wieland celebrate the holidays is by hosting family movie nights. What better way to celebrate the season than by gathering your family in your house, lighting a fire in the fireplace, passing out popcorn and hot cocoa, and watching a holiday movie together?

While there are a lot of holiday family movies from which to choose, these are the top five that we feel showcase the true meaning of the holidays while also sharing our core values. They are ones enjoyed by every generation, from the youngest to the oldest.

Five Family-Friendly Holiday Movies

It’s a Wonderful Life This is the Christmas tale of George Bailey (James Stewart), a man who spends his life trying to make the lives better for the people of Bedford Falls. He grows frustrated and finds himself down on his luck and is about to take his own life when his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers) intervenes. Clarence shows George how different his community would have been had he never existed. This movie also stars Donna Reed as George’s wife, Mary.

Miracle on 34th Street Another family favorite, this movie was made in 1947 and tells the story of a department store Santa Claus in New York City who insists he’s the real Santa. While he’s locked away for being thought insane, a young lawyer tries to prove in court that he’s the real Santa after all. Starring Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood and other classic Hollywood stars, this movie proves that all you have to do is believe.

The Polar Express Starring Tom Hanks, this animated retelling of the classic children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg shares the story of a young boy who takes a magical train to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Although he doubts Santa really exists, during the trip the boy discovers that if you really believe, the wonders of life never fade away. Even though this movie only came out in 2004, it has quickly become a family favorite in the Wieland houses.

The Muppet Christmas Carol Who can resist the Muppets? In this rendition of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Kermit, Ms. Piggy, and the whole Muppet crew tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the spirits of Christmas past, present and future. Although everyone knows the tale of Scrooge and how the ghosts change him into a kinder man, this retelling is done in a funny, whimsical, musical way that only the Muppets could pull off.

Elf  Who can resist Will Ferrell as hilarious Buddy the Elf, a human raised by elves at the North Pole who makes a trek to the United States in search of his real dad and his human identity? Also featuring James Caan, Bob Newhart and Ed Asner, this movie fills our family with the holiday spirit as well as lots of laughter.
